David Atwell inaugarated as Mayor of Newport

Councillor Atwell became Newport’s 384th Mayor at an official ceremony in the Civic Centre on May 17th. He will be supported during his year of office by his wife, Carole, as Mayoress. His charities for the year are children’s charity Ty Hafan; armed forces charity SSAFA and Pets as Therapy. He said: “It is a great privilege to serve my home city as Mayor and I am looking forward to meeting many residents and helping to raise money for some very good causes during the next 12 months.”

Whats On

Internationally renowned artist, Kathy Hinde's new project, Luminous Birds, wings its way to Old Station Tintern as part of this year’s Wye Valley River Festival. As night falls hundreds of origami-style birds will come alive with synchronised lighting sequences creating the effect of birds in flight. Luminous Birds recreates one of nature’s most amazing phenomena, the ultimate act of co-operation – birds flocking together as they fly. The spectacular installation opens at Old Station Tintern on May 6 and continues until May 15.

Commission of new bat boxes

Bats have been seen using our bat box but an update suggests that we need both roosting and nursery boxes in the same location so more are to be added. The owl might not have moved into the owl box but it does have occupants - a family of squirrels! The new bird boxes which Richard made are also proving highly desirable residences and have nearly all attracted new tenants.

The Big Lunch

The Big Lunch will be held on Sunday 12 June 2016 to coincide with the street parties to be held on the Mall for the Queen’s 90th birthday. We have ambitious plans so a sub committee will be formed to arrange the finer details. If you are interested please contact jacqui. A meeting will take place at Oakdale on Thursday 12 May, 2016 at 7pm.

Plant Competition

During Mr Neale’s talk at the AGM it was decided to hold a plant growing competition for the Big Lunch and Ian Neale will judge. Anthony Halse will be providing us with the non-stop Dahlias shortly. Everyone is invited to join in and committee members will be distributing these soon. There is no charge but after judging it is hoped you will surrender them for planting in our displays. Good luck ...may green fingers be with you!

Celebration Cider

Few villages can boast that they have a cider especially dedicated to Wales in Bloom, but The Old Hamlet can make that claim! Apples gathered in 2015 gave rise to a cider which made its debut this Spring. Wow what a cider and 8% proof as well. Mark Robotham has certainly mastered the craft as residents can testify.
