The Lighting of the Beacon at Pencoed Castle

Those living near Pencoed Castle in Llanmartin celebrated the lighting of their Beacon to commemorate her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2nd’s Platinum Jubilee in style.

The mediaeval style Brazier, fueled by burners, was erected on a scaffold in front of the old Gatehouse of the castle and lit by Dame Claire Clancy D.C.B. D.L. Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Gwent. It was preceded by a bugle call which followed the sound of bagpipes and the reading of the proclamation by The Reverend Hilary Prest. As it blazed the crowd listened to “a song for the commonwealth’ before the buglers brought the ceremony to a conclusion with the playing of ‘God save the Queen’

Earlier in the evening Ted Jeffery gave an introduction to the ancient ceremony and speculated about previous lightings at the castle over its long history. Plates were overflowing with the most delicious hog roast and the flower bar served cocktails and celebration drinks all evening. Both were heralded as one of a kind. The children also enjoyed the celebration as they tucked into their own celebration party boxes, wore crowns and twirled their lighted balloons.

After a long time spent in lockdown it was obvious that neighbours and friends were delighted to be together again and enjoyed the opportunity to be prt of this unique occasion. Thanks go to Simon Wright for the venue and to all those who pulled out all the stops to make this such a memorable occasion.
